It has been more than a month like this. Water will enter Bangkok... water won't enter Bangkok...
(the lasts news are Bangkok is safe...)

So people started to prepare for the worst. Now you can do a walk around Bangkok and see how to deal with it, different ways to protect home and business entrances.

From the removable one, for the 'night and weekend' protections...

The water level is a lot lower than last weekend.
note: NO, Don Mueang Airport is a domestic flights airport near Bangkok and hasn't anything to do with Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok International Airport. The international one is safe and totally dry.

Well, welcome again to the worst non often (almost never) updated blog of the net. And for not shocking anyone (if any stay alive out there) it will be just a short post (no kidding you weren't surprise). Just a sputnik beep beep before going back to work.

For those that were doubting about my whereabouts in this amazing time of flooding life on Bangkok just saying that everything is OK and thanks everyone for your mails, messages, facebooks and others. At least for us in any cases everything is ok, unfortunately I cannot say the same for a lot of people living around Bangkok. An amazing disaster, perfectly unorganized and misinformed by too many people. With all the misinformation and political disputes around... I feel like a peace of home near me (o sweet Spain) :)

PS: Another day I will talk about the amazing lack of real international news on the different countries in the world. More than one that I talk with was surprise when explaining the real situation here in Bangkok, the real extents, still amazing, yes. And be careful that I am not talking about news journals in Europe I think the same all around the world. Whoever want to be informed from news around the world better go direct to BBC or CNN and forget the national newspapers.

Pués como bien decía Jorge (el Ameno) en un comentario anterior, como que lo del blog lo tengo pelín abandonado. Y no, no es que sea por vacaciones. Aunque esto del verano tailandés continuo y trabajar desde casa te nubla un poco la frontera entre oficina y vacaciones, la verdad es que últimamente voy más liado de lo primero que de lo segundo. Pero como dice la familia, eso es bueno, ¿no? :)

Igualmente a ver si pongo algún dibujo, foto o mensajito, botella al agua, de vez en cuando por aquí.

Mientras tanto y aprovechando la fantástica globalización, ahí van unas fotos explusivas pa tí, Jorge (fíjate en la etiqueta de la salsa roja) y otros amigos mexicanos de Villahermosa, Monterrey o ya tirando más arriba de Washington DC de los USA. Marchando pues unos taquitos con salsa 'El Charro', jalapeños y lo que se deba, confeccionados domésticamente en Bangkok.

PS: También nos surtimos de una botella de Chianti y CHORIZO (Revilla y Campofrío). Lo dicho. Olé por la globalización.

Koh Lan and the 'self paparazzi grabbers'

Some weeks ago we went to Koh Lan.

(An island not so far from Bangkok, on the Gulf of Thailand)

It's curious to watch how some foreign tourists act out of their homeland. Don't misunderstand me, I think all of us do it in a certain degree (it's easy to spot the shouting Spaniard all around the globe), but sometimes, c'mon...
it's too much.

So there on the beach there was these group of grown guys (would say Indians but don't take my word too seriously), like a group of testosteroned adolescents, running by the beach and grabbing any occasion to do photos of themselves with the poor bikini girls that agree too. It was a pathetic scene to see. The old HO HO HO guys 'grabbing' the surprised,'don't know what to do' girls for a photo.
I can understand the attraction of the white skinning or even the so much naked parts of the body to enjoy
BUT COME OOOONNNN!!! MAAAAAAAAANNN!!

and we have the great idea to choose a Honda, japanese brand, with factory in Japan itself! So here we are, with our ration card in one hand, still waiting for it after 5 months.
Is curious to listen about the earthquake waves and have the unconscious and selfish 'C'mooon!!! not again!' shouting in your head.
But to be honest, the thing is that Japanese models still being one of the most interesting choices here in Thailand, so patience...

A nice exposition from 'La Monnaie de Paris' about the relation between Art and Money and a project of 'virtual museum', in an attempt to bring a sharing art experience on the web.
It has been a very interesting project that I wish we will continue, adding improvements and new features in a future.

As a freelance is always difficult to see a clear frontier between the Office time and the Home time, even more difficult to separate the working period from the holiday one. It's not as a regular office job, with their accurately organized scheduled vacations. Thing has it's advantages and inconvenients, of course.

Lately though I have been working as a consulting teacher (while continuing freelancing). So it's funny to recover the academic sense of 'the summer's coming'. The sort of happiness of the latest exams corrections and the waiting for the ring announcing the summer vacations.

Sometimes you find people like this, people that you will stay listening for ever, sharing coffee and rainy afternoons, listening about their life and past experiences. That was the case between Emmanuel Guilbert (the autor) and Alan Cope (the teller). The first listening and the other remembering.

If you are those who like the good storytelling, the listening of others interesting life experiences, I strongly recommend you this graphic novel. Emmanuel Guilbert do an excellent job, the transcription and illustration of the life of Alan Cope through his participation at the end of world war 2 is just impeccable. So enjoy, choose you cosiest sofa, boil your coffee and prepare to listen to Alan Cope particular war experience.

Highly enjoyable.

PS: And yes, long time that this comic is on the book store's shelves, just haven't have the occasion until now :) Better later...

Zelig method in Thailand

The funny thing about starting using (and understanding) some isolated thai words is that, surprisingly, some people simply think you understand thai. So they start talking to you as a common fluently thai speaker. Add yourself some 'Aha! ... ok!... yes' (in thai) and some extrapolation/interpretation of the body language and voilà! :)

Well, to be honest I often stop them excusing myself for not understanding. But sometimes ... let's say it's longer to explain that you don't have even a remote idea what they are talking about than letting them on their illusion. As Zelig you fade into the background with a smile.

Songkran Festival!

Quoting the wikipedia:
'The Songkran festival (Thai: สงกรานต์, from Sanskrit saṃkrānti,[1] "astrological passage") is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year's Day from 13 to 15 April. It coincides with the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia.'

So last week, joining millions of people exoding Bangkok to meet their respective families all around Thailand, we went ourself to the center east of Thailand, Kunhan. Where Tai family lives. For being more precise geographically...
somewhere in the middle of nowhere. :)

It was just a great week, seeing again known people, meeting new ones, having good rest (ríete de Nevà), wonderful meals and fresh drinks (non-alcoholic and alcoholic ones). And even freelancing from laptop+mobile. Experience that, in places like this, where soil roads replace bitumen ones sometimes, always make me think that my chosen path wasn't so wrong ... finally :)

There we celebrate Songkran Festival, the water festival. Where people throw you water and powders while passing by the street near them. Very funny.
But as risking the camera was out of the question (sometimes is not just some innocent drops :) ) couldn't have photos of the event. So there's some doodles from the week.

Based on a true event:

The 'funny' thing is that water came from a barrel with ice cubes on it. Some quite refreshing!
Yes, I admit having spit a good spanish curse and some F... words :) It's just a reflex, désolé.

running+sandals+slippery ground aren't a good combination. A third of the water can almost get the target, the other 2/3 were just ... collateral damages. He he

As if I hadn't enough things to do...
There's a project long wanted to start.

On the geeky/programmer side was the learning on how to do a site easy to update, with an admin PHP section, a mobile version of the site, plus testing a non flash approach of the web, finally is just a change of technology (yes, the html5 shining world and all the bla bla bla...). On the illustration side, well, still dreaming on trying to do something with all my doodling/drawing/illustration :) .

Badminton sweat to death sunday

Just some photos from last sunday. We went to play badminton. I won't detail how much hot was playing with an unique fan in an enormous oven like indoor place...
Let's say that as the wise words of Bruce Lee "Be water, my friend", I became sweat myself, performing some kind of innovative martial art.

But that's not the only reason of this post. The thing is that this sport place is an old cinema (amazing old fashion theatrical one) that has been rearrange to have instead a 6 badminton court inside. I did some photos with my mobile but they are not terrible. Next time will have to bring my real camera. I insist an amazing place!

And a great sunday fun!

PS: Other thing, I insist, cyborg thai don't sweat!

I suppose you don't have to appreciate enough your life for trying a bicycle in the middle of Bangkok. Only for foreigners, kamikazeeee ones!

Those late years I am really amaze how we are going to an increasingly gadget overload world. Let's be honest, putting aside the geeky/freaky first "woooooww! sooo cool! i want ooooneeee NOW!" moment, in general, who the hell really need these 'things'?. Moreover, if we add the fact that these 'caprices' are becoming really expensive ones, or at least too much expensive for a non indispensable object, what's the point?

Another day perhaps, if in the mood, I will talk about 'the regular yearly last updated gadget that you have to buy' (Apple, becoming boring, infernal business cycle)

But today there's... the AR.Drone! Yiiijaaaah!

How to enjoy 3D films (in a REAL cinema made for it)

It seems so simple...
You take a wide room, a really big big one, where you add sits in amphitheatre disposition. In a way that even having a Celtics player in front of you, you still be able to see the film easily. You add to this, a gigantic Imax screen and an amazing surround sound system.

And that's how we saw last saturday 'Tron Legacy' (in Bangkok). Really, for those who says 'why 3D?', 'where's the big deal?', bla bla bla... just I have to say that, in these conditions, and even with a somequite bad plot (sorry but, truth be said, the story was pfffff very very 'light'), the experience is just
AN AMAZING SPECTACLE! What it's mean to be a 3D film!

And why I say all this? Shouldn't be obvious?

Yes, it should. But I don't think some cinemas in Barcelona (where I use to live) think the same. So here's my delayed angry letter to Movie Theatres there. Movie theatres like Cine Bosque or Cine Icaria(sorry but for the original version there's already not so much places to choose, then 3D+Original Version... no comments).

Icaria Yelmo, for example, offers you an almost flat room (better not to have some one in front of you) with an amazingly small screen. All this with not so much spacious sits.
This is not a way to see 3D films, that's all.
And if even in these conditions you have to overpay the ticket cause oooh is a 3Dfilm i am sorry but this is stealing your money.
Other question, why in Maremagnum Imax they still only screen documentaries? (no clue)

Just for finishing with the subject, I will say that I think the same for regular, non 3D films. Screenings in other cinemas like Verdi, where the rooms are small, flat and with a not so big screen, are just so bad as the 3D screenings that I was commenting. What's the point of going to see the film on a cinema screen when you start to have better conditions at home? Wouldn't be a good idea to come back to the bigger cinemas of the past? (Cine Bosque was just one amazing screenroom).

Well, enough with 'las rabietas del abuelo'. Sorry for the interlude.

For the moment and until it changes (I know it will change, ugly fucking progress) I will continue enjoying the real Movie Theatres of Bangkok. Enjoying cinema as it has mean to be seen. :)

(PS: there are some nice cinemas still existing in Barcelona, yes, but in original version I still don't remember any)

Healthy sport

So, here I am, restarting on a healthy routine of work and sport (and selfsacrifice hobbying and others... but let's keep it out of here). Yes, sport time is back, that's one of the pleasures of having a gym room on the same condominium we live (will talk another day about the swimming pool :) but let's not be cruel for the moment).

However I question myself sometimes if it's not too much to really go there for running. At 28ºC (winter temperature) let's say I could just go there, stand still for an hour and come back. Sauna therapy. But no, what would be the point? No pain, no gain! Let's run!

Winter haircut brrrrrr....

So yes, finally have my hair cut, my once in three months moment. A tremendous idea to do when the freezing winter almost here. Fuck yeah!
Luckily the haircut finished with a shampooing and massaging session, yes, you know the little 'à la mode' thing, something that could have been like this

but was more of an awkward 'when does it finish gonna break my glasses' situation. In an empty haircut saloon and with a rhythm&blues Beyoncé (or one of the kind) for the sexy background song. Uncomfortably nice.

so yes, in a crazy expending attack i have got the last Blacksad (4th of the serie if i'm not wrong) and well that was a fair adquisition. Just another masterpiece. Good detective story, amazing ambiance/characters and incredible artwork. Don't hesitate.
